What Causes Keratoconus?

In keratoconus, there is a progressive thinning of the cornea though the cause of this has not been determined. It seems to be due to a combination of causes. Genetics contribute, allergies are commonly associated and it can be found in various, rare conditions. Increasingly there has been found to be an association between eye rubbing and keratoconus, such that in most cases its progression can be slowed considerably if patients stop eye rubbing. There are many factors that can be involved.
