Using Spectacles to Slow Myopia Progression

Using spectacles to slow myopia progression.

As our understanding and research into myopia increases we are finding that spectacles can also be used to slow myopia progression.

First thing to do, if we are prescribing single vision, distance glasses, is to make sure that your child is given the full correction. Under correcting the distance prescription is now understood to speed up myopia progression.

To slow down myopia progression we are using special bifocal lenses, with a line right across. These have the distance prescription up the top, and a near prescription down the bottom and have a special prism incorporated in them. These have been found to slow progression by close to 40%. New multifocal lens designs are also being developed and being slowly released to the market. These are also effective at slowing myopia progression and should be generally available in the not too distant future.
