Control Myopia Progression

May 21, 2022 | Myopia

Myopia control is becoming an important part of an Optometrists role. The rates of myopia or short sightedness have been rapidly increasing. The causes appear to be both genetic and environmental. When your short sightedness gets worse the eyeball most commonly elongates and this stretching of the retina can lead to eye disease. Here at Boneham Optometrist we have been practising myopia control for more than 25 years mainly through the use of orthokeratology lenses. Dr Boneham has been helping to spread the word in Australia and around the world mainly through his work as the President of the Orthokeratology Society of Oceania and being on the executive of the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia control.

Over time new technologies have been developed and these add to the options that we have for treating myopia progression. The latest technologies are soft multifocal contact lenses. We have been using the Coopervision MiSight lenses since the middle of 2018 and, just recently, our practice has been selected to be one of the first stockists of the new NaturalVue lens. Both of these lenses use special optics to control myopia progression. If you want to know more about these lenses and other myopia control options then make an appointment so that we can discuss the best solution for your child’s myopia.
